Highly honored, noble Wendish brothers and sisters of Wendish origin and Evangelical Lutheran confession of faith.

Johann Kilian, unforgettable Wendish Patriot and first Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Pastoral district of Weigersdorf-Klitten, in the region of Rothenburg, for now almost 70 and more years has left behind for us Wends also the undying maxim and solution (in a possible adequate German translation): “Wends, let no one rob you of your Father language and belief!”

But I underscore – 30 years until now perhaps the last Wendish Pastor of the Evangelical Church of Weigersdorf-Klitten, - now in retirement, labors further for the Wendish nationality and it was in his literature, and I have during the last years stamped the watchword in the likeness of the Kilian example…

Wends, as our inheritance, remain true and look after your Mother Tongue! We must need be undying in carrying on the beautiful! [language]

In the course of now about 2 years I have translated the complete extent of the immortal heroic poem of Homer’s Odyssey and the Iliad into the Wendish idiom and thus have lifted and enriched the Wendish literature as the whole Slavic world will see it after completing the printing of the entire work, which was begun in the previous fall and a test sample is here enclosed 1) and following under news wrapper, permit me to overreach – a single further brochure 2) as proof of my activity toward promoting Sorbianism. And also concerning the so-called business transaction of the “Wendish Homer” is here also now [enclosed] at the same time under wrapper. The copies of the following under # 3) the so called written piece and official documents. And with these enclosures (under 3), I mean, you will receive and it will be demonstrated how important the “Wendish Homer” will be for the Wends especially for their intellectual study in the future.

Noble benefactors – until # 36, and it was in German, Wends and other Slavs – have already spent somewhat over 18,000 Marks. But yet noteworthy (at the present time the cost of typesetting, printing and paper) will be around 7,000 Marks. Of this, or of each forthcoming installment of it, noble benefactors in Serbin along with the Germans, through the last unfortunate war, the impoverished Wends in Europe herewith of important concern and … allow us to ask, [for assistance?] when for 2 years in the Weigersdorf-Klitten parish through your present Pastor Biehler, which I had at his request toward America in the Wendish idiom to translate, for the purpose of the church congregation there to complete the goal, over 10,000 Marks contributed to adjust the expenditure, so I hope to insure for our scholarly work, how the Wendish Homer translation is twofold and as such also would be recognized as how a similar fair support and demand from a distance truly enjoined people to reach in America, through Weigersdorf-Klitten’s Pastor Biehler.

The “Wendish Homer” would be a monument for the Wends and their publication, lasting as bronze (Monumentum..,” ….III,30,1) and all noble benefactors (…), which with your support, help to bring the work to its completion, are and remain sharing and worthy lasting thanks and honorable remembrance. The printing of the Odyssey in 1000 copies will, God willing, be completed in some 8 weeks, but the Iliad would follow yet this year near Michaelmus [Sept. 29] that is if until Michaelmas of this year the yet to this time required of about 7000 marks can be contributed or sent to us.

Toward the calendar: … at an undetermined time, we must not delay the printing otherwise we must search for a feasible time to end the whole work, above all, in my soon 75 years “the night comes and no one can work’! (Jn 9:4)

Highly honored, noble and true Wends in America, I ask you then, most humbly and urgently, would you as down payment of the 10-jointed “Commission toward the publication of the “Wendish Homer” share good until Michaelmus of this year, may we await of and in whatever amount a demand to the completion of the “Wendish Homer” to us from America?!

God, the all-highest and almighty, whose compassionate guide of humanity and your history and protecting Lord also your Wendish people and your future, I with our Wends also in Serbin commend and truly greet you, I am your willing devoted Pastor emeritus.

und Schwestern noch wendischer
Herkunft und evang.-lutherischen Glaubensbekenntnises!

Johann Kilian, unvergeßlicher wendischer Patriot und erster Pastor des evang.-lutherischen Pfarrbezirks Weigersdorf-Klitten, Kreis Rothenburg O/L, vor nun bald 70 und mehr Jahren hat uns Wenden auch die unsterbliche Sentenz und Losung hinterlassen (in möglichst adequater Verdeutschung):
“Wenden, laßt euch nicht rauben eurer Väter Sprach und Glauben.!”

Ich, Unterschreibender aber, - 30 Jahre hindurch vielleicht der letzte wendische Pastor der evang.-luth. Parochie Weigersdorf-Klitten,- nun im Ruhestande, arbeite weiter für das wendische Volkstum und zwar in seiner Literatur, und habe während der letzten Jahre mir eine der kilianischen ähnliche Losung geprägt - …: (1 … tichon)

Wenden, als Erbe laßt treu die Muttersprache uns pflegen!

Wollen unsterblich wir sein, tragen wir müssen sie fein!
Im Laufe von nur bald 2 Jahren habe ich in Sonderheit die unsterblichen Heldenlieder Homer´s Odysse und Ilias in vollem Umfang in das wendische Idiom übertragen und somit die wendische Literatur erheblich bereichert, wie die ganze slawische Welt es sehen wird nach Fertigstellung der Drucklegung des ganzen Werkes, mit der im vorigen Herbst begonnen ward und woraus hier ein Probestück beizufügen 1) und anfolgend unter Kreuzband zu überreichen mir erlaube - neben einigen weiteren Broschüren 2) als Erweis meiner Tätigkeit zur Förderung des Sorbentums. Und auch betreffs der sogenannten Angelegenheit der “W.H.” (wendischer Homer) wird (?) hier zugleich unter Kreuzband wohl auch noch erscheinen die folgenden unter Nr. 3) genannten Schrift- und Aktenstücke.

Aus und mit diesen Beilagen (unter 3) wird, meine ich, bestens erhalten und erwiesen sein, wie wichtig der “W.H.” für die Wenden, insbesondere ihre studierende Intelligenz, in alle Zukunft sein wird.

Edle Wohltäter - bisher an Zahl 36, und zwar Deutsche, Wenden andere Slawen - haben zur und Drucklegung des “W.H.” bereits etwas über 18.000 Mark gespendet. Aber noch nötig (bei den derzeitigen

Preisen für Satz, Druck und Papier) werden etwa 7.000 Mark sein, um die, oder jeden willkommenen Teilbetrag davon, edle Wohltäter in Serbin mit samt den Deutschen, durch den letzten unglücklichen Krieg verarmte Wenden in Europa hiermit angelegentlich und … zu bitten uns erlauben.

Wenn vor 2 Jahren in Weigersdorf-Klittener Parochie durch ihren derzeitigen Pastor Biehler, dem ich seine Bitte nach Amerika in´s Wendische Idiom zu übertragen hatte, für die dortigen kirchgemeindlichen Zwecke die gar reiche, über 10.000 Mark bemessene Spende gereicht ward, so hoffe ich zuversichtlich für unser wissenschaftliches Werk, welches die wendische Homer-Übersetzung zweifellos ist und als solches auch anerkannt wird, eine ähnlich gütige Unterstützung und Förderung von Seiten treuer Volksgenossen in Amerika zu erlangen, wie Weigersdorf-Klitten durch P. Biehler.

Der “W.H.” wird für die Wenden und ihr Schrifttum ein Denkmal sein, dauernder als Erz (“Monumentum …” ………….III, 30, 1) und alle edlen Wohltäter (…) , die mit ihrer Spende das Werk

zum Abschluß fördern helfen, sind und bleiben dauernden Dankes und ehrenvollen Andenkens teilhaftig und würdig. Der Druck des Odysseus in 1000 Exemplaren wird, will´s Gott, in etwa 8 Wochen beendet sein, die Ilias aber folgt noch dies Jahr nach Michaeli, d.h., falls bis Michaeli d.J. die zurzeit noch benötigten etwa 7000 Mark uns gereicht oder gesichert sein könnten.

Ad calend … - auf unbestimmte Zeit, möchten wir die Drucklegung nicht verschieben müssen, sondern suchen tunlichst das ganze Werk zum Abschluß zu bringen, zumal bei meinen bald 75 Jahren “die Nacht kommt, die niemand wirken kann”! Joh. 9, 49(?)

Hochgeehrte, edle und treue Wenden in Amerika wollen, bitte ich dann (?) ergebenst und angelegentlich, mir als Vorsitzenden der 10-gliedrigen “W.H.” gutigst bis Michaeli d. J.
mit(zu)teilen, ob und in etwa welchem Betrag eine Förderung zur Fertigstellung des “W.H.“ uns aus Amerika gewährt werden können möchte?!

Jan Kilian, njezapomnity serbski wótčinc a prěni duchowny Wukrančansko-Klětnjanskeje ewangelsko-lutherskeje wosady před nětk bórzy 70 a wjace lětami, je nam Serbam tež to njesmjertne hrono a hesło zawostajił: “Serbja, zachowajće swěru swojich wótcow rěč a wěru!”

Ja - podpisany pak, 30 lět dołho traš posledni serbski duchowny Wukračansko-Klětnjanskeje lutherskeje wosady, nětko na wotpočinku, dźěłam dale za Serbowstwo a sym na poslednje lěta Kilianowemu podomne hesło sebi wutworił - tola: Serbja, namrětu rěč sej hajmy maćernu swěru!
Chcemy-li njesmjertni być, horliwje pěstujmy rěč!

W běhu poslednich nětk bórzy 12 lět sym ja wosebje Homerowej njesmjertnej basni - Odyseju a Iliadu - w połnym wobsahu zeserbšćił, z čimž so serbske pismowstwo wobohaći, kaž wšón słowjanski swět to widźeć budźe po doćišćenju cyłeho dźěła, z kotrymž je loni nazymu so započało, a z kotrehož tu pokazku 1) připołožić a z pódlanskim knižnym zwjazkom přepodać sebi dowolam - pódla někotrych druhich 2) spisow za dopokazmo swojeho skutkowanja k lěpšemu Serbow. A tež wo nalěžnosći tak mjenowanej “S.H.” (serbskeho Homera) směm (sobu pod křižnym zwjazkom) drje dodać sćěhowace lisćiny: 3) (hlej delka - …mjenowane)!
