Dear old friend,

You are herewith receiving the dispersed money, 1 dollar and 25 cents. My son Bernhard got the satchel himself from Giddings and paid 50 cents for it. He is now with my daughter Theresia, who married the steam miller Albert Peter at Serbin.

I sincerely thank you for all the trouble that you have so lovingly undertaken in my behalf.

But I also request that you look at my overly excited letter in a positive light. You see that I am half-crazy under these conditions. But put yourself in my place and imagine how low your spirits would be if you had a child who got lost as my child got lost. Indeed the crisis lasted for only 9 days, but the time was very long for a father and a mother.

You have been so kind to portray the situation from its mildest side in order to comfort us. For that I credit only our old friendship. But as a result the situation in itself is not good. I, however, remain distressed over this story.

I firmly believe that from the status you enjoy in Brenham, you can easily find some work opportunities for Bernhard. But remember, that I am a Lutheran and that you once belonged to my congregation. We both have endured good and evil in Serbin, and have remained faithful to each other. Where is now Tonn?

Now however, there is no Lutheran congregation and church in Brenham. Would you expect that I would give up my child to a town where there is no Lutheran congregation and church? Neither is there a Lutheran congregation and church in Austin nor in Giddings, nor Brenham nor Hempstead. In none of these towns could one send his child. But you have the power to build a Lutheran church in Brenham. You should build a Lutheran church in Brenham. Do not ask what will happen after that. The congregation will develop and surpass the Catholic and the Methodist.

You are a rich man. When you die, you will be forgotten. Would you not like to erect a memorial and build a Lutheran church in Brenham? Then you will not be forgotten when you die. How else can your riches help you? Enough about this.

XX Some time ago we received your photograph and the picture of your wife. Both pictures were nicely done. But we have never thanked you for them. You can see from that we can also be rude. Now in September of last year I was at a conference in Big Cypress, and sent my greetings to you in Brenham, because I had no time to visit you personally on the return trip having had myself photographed in Houston with my daughter Theresia. You will soon receive the picture and the picture of my Theresia as soon as you and your wife visit us. Theresia has a picture of you and your wife. Otherwise no one in my family is so genteel that anyone has an album. When you visit me and my wife, who is still clings to thoughts of your wife, so you must also visit my Theresia since my Theresia brings me joy.

Her Albert is also not crude and will surely be successful in the world. But when you visit me, which will most likely do both of us good, you should come here at the time of the sour cucumbers, June, July, August. After Easter I have the conference here and immediately after Pentecost, the synodical assembly in Altenburg, Missouri.

When you visit us, you will be able to see, how beautiful your former shabby little store in Serbin has become through the bankrupt Ewald Seidel. Bankruptcy is indeed not evil. Through it marvelous things come to the world. In contrast there is certainly the old fatherly proverb, Honesty is the best policy. But our time is a time of progress. To hell or to heaven? That is the question. I would like to make a public appearance and write. But my heart and money fail me. I believe that now the entire world is overcome with sleep. If I write publically, the world would at least wake up and be lively. You would think too much has been said. But try it with me, you financier. I must have a financier, otherwise I can do nothing. But my financier, when I obtain one, will not come up short and no one will go bankrupt once more.

When you visit Serbin once more, take heed of two rules 1) Do not come without your wife, so that my wife has a diversion 2) Notify me beforehand, when you wish to come, so that we can receive you and your wife as graciously as possible.

My greatest worry lies in the fact that a person in Texas cannot bring a child into a Christian community that is Lutheran and that one must therefore go to the North, when a Christian child is to be kept and advanced in true Christian surroundings.

Texas is still a half wild land. But it can happen that it may become the first land of Christendom if it wishes. Do not think that I am irrational. I am still hanging in there.

With that I commend you to the future. My wife commends you likewise and remember the fellowship that she had with you and your wife. Greet your wife from us.

Geliebter, alter Freund!

Sie empfangen hiermit das ausgelegte Geld, 1 Doll. 25 cts. Das Satchel hat mein Sohn Bernhard sich selbst in Giddings geholt und da 50 cts dafür bezahlt. Er ist jetzt bei meiner Tochter Theresia, welche an den Dampfmüller Albert Peter bei Serbin verheirathet ist.

Ihnen danke ich herzlich für alle Berauhung Beschwerde, die Sie mir zu Liebe übernahmen.

Ich bitte aber auch, mir meinen exaltierten Brief zu Gute zu halten. Sie sehen, daß ich unter Umständen halb närrisch bin. Setzen Sie sich aber an meine Stelle und denken Sie, wie es Ihren zu Muthe sein würde, wenn Ihren ein Kind so abhanden käme, wie mir mein Kind abhanden kam. Die Noth dauerte freilich nur 9 Tage, aber die Zeit war doch lang für einen Vater und für eine Mutter.

Sie sind so freundlich gewesen, uns die Sache von der mildesten Seite darzustellen, um uns zu trösten. Daran erkenne ich bloß Ihre alte Freundschaft. Aber dadurch wird die Sache an sich selbst nicht gut. Ich bleibe doch betrübt über diese Geschichte.

Daß Sie bei dem Ansehen, das Sie in Brenham haben, leicht einen Platz für Bernhard finden würden, glaube ich gern. Aber bedenken Sie, daß ich ein Lutheraner bin und daß Sie selbst zu meiner Gemeinde gehörten. Gutes u Böses haben wir mit einander in Serbin durchgemacht und haben treu zu einander gestanden. Wo ist jetzt Tonn?

Nun ist aber in Brenham keine lutherische Gemeinde und Kirche. Könnten Sie mir zumuthen, daß ich mein Kind in eine Stadt gebe, wo keine lutherische Gemeinde und Kirche ist? ++Weder in Austin, noch in Giddings, noch in Brenham noch in Hempstead ist eine lutherische Gemeinde und Kirche. In keine dieser Städte kann man sein Kind hingeben. Sie haben aber die Macht, in Brenham eine lutherische Kirche zu bauen. Bauen Sie eine lutherische Kirche in Brenham. Was weiter kommt darnach fragen Sie nicht. Die Gemeinde würde sich finden u die Katholiken u Methodisten überflügeln.

Sie sind ein reicher Mann. Wenn Sie sterben, werden Sie vergessen. Wollen Sie sich nicht ein Denkmal errichten und eine lutherische Kirche in Brenham bauen? Dann werden Sie nicht vergessen sein, wenn Sie gestorben sein werden. Was kann Ihren sonst Ihr Reichthum helfen? Doch genug hiervon.

XX Vor langer Zeit empfingen wir Ihr Bild und das Bild Ihrer Frau Gemahlin. Beide Bilder sind sehr gut getroffen. Aber wir haben Ihnen niemals dafür gedankt. Sie sehen daraus, daß wir auch ungezogen sein können. Nun habe ich im September vorigen Jahres, als ich zur Conferenz in Big Cypress war u Sie in Brenham begrüßen ließ, weil ich keine Zeit hatte, Sie auf der Durchreise selbst zu besuchen, in Houston mit meiner Tochter Theresia mich abconterfeinen lassen. Dieses Bild und das Bild meiner Theresia sollen Sie bekommen, so bald Sie uns mit Ihrer Frau Gemahlin besuchen. Die Abbildung Ihrer Person und Ihrer Frau Gemahlin hat meine Theresia. Sonst ist in meiner Famile niemand so fein, daß er ein Album hätte. Wenn Sie mich und meine Frau, die noch an Ihrer Frau hängt, besuchen, so werden Sie auch meiner Theresia besuchen müssen denn meine Theresia macht mir Freude.

+Ihr Albert ist auch nicht unfein und wird vermuthlich sein Glück in der Welt machen. Wenn Sie mich aber besuchen, was wahrscheinlich mir und Ihnen gut sein würde, so sollten Sie in der Zeit der sauren Gurken hieher kommen, Juni, Juli, August. Denn noch Ostern habe ich Conferenz hier und gleich nach Pfingsten Synodalversammlung in Altenburg, Mo.

Wenn Sie uns besuchen, werden Sie auch sehen können, wie Ihr einstiger ärmlicher Store in Serbin durch den bankerotten Ewald Seidel, so schön geworden ist. Der Bankerott ist doch nicht übel. Dadurch kommen die herrlichsten Dinge zur Welt. Dagegen steht freilich das altvaterische Sprichwort. 0 0 Ehrlich währt am längsten. Aber unsere Zeit ist eine Zeit des Fortschritts. Zur Hölle oder zum Himmel? Das ist die Frage. Ich möchte öffentlich auftreten u schreiben. Aber es fehlt mir am Herz und am Geld. Ich glaube, daß jetzt die ganze Welt schlaftrunken ist. Wenn ich öffentlich schriebe, würde die Welt doch wenigstens aufwachen und munter werden. Das ist doch zu viel gesagt, werden Sie denken. Aber versuche Sie es mit mir, Sie Geldmann. Einen Geldmann muß ich haben, sonst kann ich nichts thun. Aber mein Geldmann wenn ich einen erlange wird nicht zu kurz kommen u wird einmal mehr bankerott werden.

Wenn Sie aber Serbin einmal besuchen, so nehmen Sie zwei Regeln in Acht. 1) Kommen Sie nicht ohne Ihre Frau Gemahlin, damit auch meine Frau einmal ein Vergnügen hat. 2) Melden Sie mir vorher, wann Sie kommen wollen, damit wir Sie und Ihre Frau Gemahlin so glänzend, als möglich, empfangen können.

Mein größter Kummer liegt darin, daß man in Texas ein Kind in keine christliche Gemeinschaft bringen kann die lutherische wäre, und daß man also nach dem Norden gehen muß, wenn ein christliches Kind im wahren Christenthum erhalten gefördert werden soll. Texas ist doch noch ein halb wildes Land. Aber es kann kommen, daß es das erste Land der Christenheit wird wenn Sie wollen. Denken Sie nicht daß ich irrsinner bin. Ich bin bei einander.

Damit empfehle ich mich Ihnen für die Zukunft. Meine Frau empfiehlt sich gleichfalls und gedenkt der Gemeinschaft, die sie mit Ihnen und Ihrer Frau Gemahlin hatte. Grüßen Sie Ihre Frau Gemahlin von uns.
