(From Leipe and from Anton)
Translated by Ed Bernthal
They were hoeing and plowing there,
Laying in the hollow.
Played there, danced there,
I quickly ran from there.
My loved one came home,
To sing with me.
Took me by the hand,
To dance and skip.
He played the drum and the fiddle,
I have only a small coin,
My loved one has much money,
To pay for my expenses.
‘Don’t depend on me,
I still have a dollar,
But if I dance that away,
I will have no more bread.’
Much was not paid for,
To make the music,
The father was drumming,
Everything was so loud.
He drummed and made so much noise,
You could hear it far away.
He could still play better,
But it took him too long.
I danced
And sang so fine.
My loved one needed money,
It had to be paid for.
The loved one took my money
To pay for it all,
Took me by the hand,
And walked home with me.
