One of the books produced by Jan Kilian

A fascinating book. Would be very interesting to have the contents translated. Bogatzki was of Hungerian birth, but studied in Halle, Germany. Halle was considered to be the heart of the Pietistic movement. Pietism's pioneers, people like Phillip Jakob Spener, August Franke, Johann Arnd, were the pioneers of the Pietistic movement and taught in the University of Halle. That Kilian thought it important enough to see to the translation of this book into sorbisch, speaks to his own Pietistic inclinations. Though Kilian maintained that he was not a disciple of Pietism, the fact that he had this Pietistic book translated into sorbisch undergirds that he as well as a large number of the Texas Wends held to Pietistic tendencies. Johann Arnd, an acclaimed Pietist, wrote a book called "Wahre Christenthum" ("True Christianity). That book, too, was translated into sorbisch. I would bet that if one were to look in the vault, the most duplicated Wendish book would be this one.

Hats off to you and Martin for the labor intensive work of naming all of those who helped make the book possible by ordering copies of it. Did you notice any names of Texas Wends in that long list? Interesting, too, is the fact that people with very much German sounding surnames ordered this Wendish book...which makes me believe that a goodly number of Germans were influenced by the Wendish culture and language.

Thanks for sharing. Really interesting.

Gruetzner and Gross Dehsa

Having now had a chance to look over the translation, I have found some very interesting. The Grützner listed, Peter Grützner, is from Gross Dehsa. This is where my great great grandfather, Johann Grützner, emigrated from! If these are adults buying these books, which would be the assumption, this could make Peter the father of Johann (or an older brother or uncle). At any rate, this is the very first real lead I've had on my family there.
