B. 077. The Dead Loved One

(From: Burk)
Translated by Ed Benthal

‘Coachman, harness the horses,
Harness both of the brown ones!’

They traveled for a short distance,
‘Coachman, just stop and see!’

‘Coachman, just stop and see!
See what shines there so green.’

‘Is it a shoot out of the ground,
Or is it my loved ones new castle?’

“No, that is not a shoot out of the ground,
It is your loved ones new castle.”

They traveled a little further,
‘Coachman, stop and listen there!’

‘Coachman, stop and listen there,
Tell me what is ringing there.’

‘Is the meadow lark singing,
Or is it my sweetheart crying?’

They traveled a little further,
And then they got there.

The old mother came out:
“Welcome, my young ones!”

“Tell me what news you are bringing?”
‘We want to see Hanka.’

“Oh, she was so sick, O God.
And now she is already dead.”

“We decorated her so fine,
Dressed her in white.”

The loved one came into the room,
Hanka was on the bier.

In the golden casket,
With a rue wreath.

The loved one cried and wrung
His hands much in grief.

Now say farewell likewise,
She will never come back to you.

“Don’t say farewell, just remember,
They have more girls.”

‘What do I care about the others,
When my Hanka is not here anymore.’

No known music.
