B. 076. The Lost Ring

(From: Burk and Anton)
Translated by Ed Bernthal

Hannchen went with a cheerful mind
To the lake to get water.

One can she filled up,
Her ring fell into it.

To drink water from the can,
Came her sweetheart.

There he found the ring,
The pretty golden ring.

‘Give me the ring again,
I will give you a wreath for it.’

“A wreath for a ring?
One must be a real fool.”

“The wreath is made of rue,
The ring is made of gold.”

She misled him, misled him,
By taking him home with her.

She got him drunk with beer and wine,
And took the ring away from him.

Then she shoved him out of the window,
Looking at him with her brown eyes.
