Dear Pastor,

In accordance with your request which appeared in No. 33, page 261 of the Lutheran Review, I would like to point out that the state legislature of Texas created a new county this year, out of the border areas of Bastrop, Fayette Washington, and Burleson counties and gave it the name of Lee County. The legislature furthermore instructed that the place for the county seat should be voted for by the male residents of this area. This election took place on June 2nd. Giddings was selected by a large majority. At first Giddings was no more than a depot on the railroad when the railroad was completed which extended from Galveston and Houston to Austin, the capitol of Texas. Now Giddings is a friendly town on a high elevation, 6 miles distant from my parsonage, which has its own post office. But Serbin has its own post office, which was established here in 1860.

In this new county there are now 3 pastors of the Missouri Synod, namely myself, Pastor J. Kilian, who has now been in this same place for twenty years, and my neighbor P.[astor] J. Greif, whose church and residence stands within eyesight of my parsonage, who moved here in the previous year following the death of Pastor J. Pallmer. We both now have the following address:

But 14 miles away on the West Yegua is the congregation of Pastor J. Proft. His address is Rev. J. Proft, Giddings, Lee Co. Texas.

Pastor P. Klindworth has come to Pastor A. Greif’s place. Earlier he had a small congregation next to P. Greif. He, therefore, would have the same address as P. Greif.

In the previous year the following were found of the Missouri Synod: Rev. A. Hofius, Columbus, Colorado, Co. Texas and Rev. A. Meyer at White Oak new Houston and whose address is: Rev. A. Meyer, Box 198, Houston, Texas.

I must yet say something of P. A. Schmidt. He was a pupil of the Hermannsburg Mission Society and came to America. I ordained him at the request of my Presidium in 1871 at Blackjack Springs, Fayette Co. Texas. But Pastor Schmidt did not stay there very long. He later served a congregation near Houston, which, however, dismissed him, as I have heard. I suggest that you leave his name off of the roster of pastors, provided that you have come across nothing more than I have written. He supposedly is still living in Texas, but without a pastorate. This is confidential.

Hochehrwürdiger Herr Pastor!

In Gemäßheit Ihrer Aufforderung, welche in No.33 S.261 der Lutherischen Zeitschrift steht, zeige ich Ihnen an, daß die Staatslegislatur von Texas in diesen Jahre aus den Grenzbezirken der Counties Bastrop, Fayette, Washington, und Burleson ein neues County gebildet und demselben den Namen “Lee County” gegeben hat.

Die Legislatur hatte, auch angeordnet, daß die männliche Bevölkerung dieser Landschaft durch ordentliche Wahl den Platz zum Countysitz bestimmen sollte. Diese Wahl fand am 2ten Juni d. J. Statt. Mit großer Majorität wurde Giddings zur Countystadt gemacht. Giddings war erst nun ein Eisenbahn Depot als die Eisenbahn fertig war, welche von Galveston u Houston nach Austin, der Hauptstadt von Texas, führt. Jetzt ist Giddings ein freundliches, hochgelegenes Städtchen, 6 Meilen von meiner Pfarrwohnung entfernt, welches sein eigenes Postamt hat. Serbin aber behält sein Postamt auch, welches im Jahren 1860 hieher kam.

In diesem neuen County befinden nun sich 3 der Missouri Synod zugehörige Pastoren, nehmlich ich, der Pastor J. Kilian, der ich nun ins zwanzigsten Jahre an demselben Platze stehe, und mein Nachbar P[astor] J. Greif, dessen Kirche und Wohnung ich stets von meinem Pfarrhause aus vor mir sehe, welcher noch dem im vorigen Jahre erfolgten Ableben des Pastors J. Pallmer hieher gezogen ist. Wir beide haben jetzt folgende Adresse:

Rev. A. D. Greif Serbin, Lee Co. Texas

Aber 14 Meilen von uns hat seine Gemeinde der Pastor J. Proft an der West Yegua. Seine Adresse ist: Rev. J. Proft, Giddings, Lee Co. Texas.

Die Stelle des Pastors A Grief ist der Pastor P. Klindworth gekommen, der früher neben dem P. Greif eine kleine Gemeinde hatte. Derselbe wird also wohl die Adresse haben, die P. Greif hatte.

Noch muß ich Ihnen von dem P. A. Schmidt etwas sagen. Er war ein Hermannsburger Missionszögling, und kam nach Amerika. Ich ordinirte ihn im Auftrag meines Präsidiums in St. Louis im Jahre 1871 in Blackjack Springs, Fayette Co. Texas. Aber da blieb der Pastor Schmidt nicht lange. Später bediente er eine Gemeinde bei Houston, welche ihn aber abgedankt hat wie ich hore. Ich rathe Ihnen, seinen Namen aus dem Verzeichniß der Pastoren wegzulassen, falls Sie über ihn nichts etwas Weiteres erfahren als was ich Ihnen schreibe, Er soll noch in Texas leben aber ohne Amt.
