Dear Mr. President!

With this letter you are receiving several notices concerning the ordination and installation by me on the first Sunday after Trinity on the 11th of June this year of candidate Andreas Schmidt. This ceremony took place in the newly constructed church dedicated by me on Quinquagesime Sunday the 19th of February this year at Blackjack Spring, Fayette Co. Texas.

The candidate for ordination arrived here on the first Pentecost festival early before the church service with members of my congregation from Giddings. The new train station Giddings lies 5 miles north of my house and is establishing a young town of already 50 or more houses, after the Galveston - Austin railroad, as it progresses to us and every day provides trains to here, in 6 or more weeks. I have not seen the young town as I am not plagued with curiosity.

The candidate lodged with me and stayed in the bedroom of my children. My two daughters meanwhile had to lie down somewhere in my living room where my wife and I sleep. In the attic under the roof it is unbearable during this part of the year because of the heat.

Because I believed that the candidate should be presented to his congregation as soon as possible, I hired a chauffeur who took the young man to Blackjack Spring on the 3d feast after Pentecost a distance by a direct route of approximately 25 miles. He only carried a suitcase, his remaining things he had sent to Blackjack Spring via Columbus.

I thought he would remain there until his ordination, where there is more space for guests at merchant Louis Luck than in my parsonage at Serbin, and the opportunity of an temporary stay among people, whose pastor he would become, would pleasantly orient him. But he had other thoughts, and returned back to me with the chauffeur in order to stay with me and then return with me to Blackjack Spring on the day of his installation. That surprised me because he told me that he found the people there quite friendly and cooperative.

During the time of his stay the candidate studied nearly all the time and together with me familiarized himself with liturgy, the keeping of church records and the like. I asked him to preach here. He did not want to. And yet he did not lack the courage because he occasionally censured our way of living and because of this, one time I got into a heated discussion with him. One time he told he told me that he remains a Hermannsburger with his whole heart.

When we arrived at merchant and postmaster Louis Luck on June 10, we found him willing to keep both of us, Candidate Schmidt and myself overnight.

On Sunday morning I preached again on 2 Corinthians 5:17-21, then performed the ordination and installation according to the order of the Missouri liturgy and held communion at which the candidate also participated.

That afternoon at 3 o’clock a congregational assembly was held, which I was requested to attend. I opened the congregational assembly with a hymn and prayer and showed him how a congregational assembly should be held. During the vote for the president, two leading people spoke and were nominated even though they did not belong to the congregation. I explained that the assembly was a temporary one. Thereupon the one took the presidency and asked what should be considered. Upon my motion, only school matters were considered and to postpone for the future the consolidation of the congregation. I closed again with prayer and song.

The difficulty at Blackjack Spring lies in the fact that the people, who Pastor Schmidt is supposed to serve, is composed of church people and free thinkers. The free thinkers cannot start much without the church people, and the church people by themselves about as little. The only way the one side can build a church and the other side to attract the free thinkers, so that they freely try to understand Christianity, would be that the church congregation exist by itself and the school group stay by itself, so that everyone would be given the opportunity to follow his own heart. After this course of action Louis Luck made an important comment, which I in consideration of conditions, immediately ordered.

Accordingly school is to be held so that during the 4 morning hours the school subjects will be taught without religion, and in the afternoon hours from 2 o’clock on only those items with religion.

Hochwürdiger, Geliebter Herr Präses!

Sie empfangen hiermit einige Notizen über die von mir Dom. I p. F. Trinitatis, am 11ten Juni d. J., vollzogene Ordination und Einführung des Candid. Andreas Schmidt. Diese Feierlichkeit geschah in der neu erbauten Dom. Quinquagesim. den 19ten Februar dieses Jahres von mir eingeweihten Kirche zu Blackjack Spring, Fayette Co. Texas.

Ordinandus kam hier am ersten Pfingstage früh vor dem Gottesdienst mit meinen Kirchleuten von Giddings an. Die neue Eisenbahnstation Giddings liegt 5 Meilen nördlich von meinem Hause und bildet eine junge Stadt von bereits 50 oder mehr Häusern, nachdem die Galveston-Austiner Eisenbahn vor 6 oder mehr Wochen bis zu uns gediehen ist und alle Tage Züge bis hieher befördert. Ich habe die junge Stadt noch nicht gesehen, da mich die Neugierde nicht plagt.

Ordinandus logierte sich bei mir ein und mußte mit der Schlafstube meiner Kinder für lieb nehmen. Meine beiden Töchter mußten derweile in meiner Wohnstube in der auch ich mit meiner Frau schlafe, irgendwo liegen. Auf dem Oberboden unter dem Dache ist es in dieser heißen Jahreszeit der Hitze wegen nicht auszuhalten.

Da mir daran lag, daß Ordinandus sich seiner Gemeinde so bald als möglich präsentiren möchte, so miethete ich einen Führmann, der den jungen Mann am 3ten Pfingstag nach Blackjack Spring fuhr, auf directem Wege eine Strecke von etwa 25 Meilen. Er hatte bloß einen Reisekoffer, seine übrigen Sachen hatte er über Columbus nach Blackjack Spring gehen lassen.

Ich dachte er würde bis zu seiner Ordination dort bleiben, da beim Kaufmann Louis Luck mehr Gelaß für Gäste ist, also in meiner Pfarrwohunng zu Serbin, und da die Gelegenheit eines vorläufigen Aufenthalt unter Leuten, deren Pastor er werden sollte, ihn recht schön orientiren konnte. Allein er hatte andere Gedanken und kam mit dem Fuhrmann wieder zu mir zurück, um bei mir zu bleiben und erst mit mir wieder am Tage vor seiner Einführung nach Blackjack Spring zu fahren. Das wunderte mich da er doch aussagte, er hätte die Leute dort recht freundlich und willig gefunden.

Weil die Vocation nicht nach St. Louis gelangt war, so forderte er eine Vocationschrift in Black Spring und erhielt sie. Sie ist kurz, enthält aber das Wesentliche.

In der Zeit seines Hierseins studierte Ordinandus fast immer und machte sich Liturgisches, Kirchenbuchsführung und dergleichen bei mir bekannt. Ich forderte ihn auf hier einmal zu predigen. Er wollte nicht. Und doch fehlt es ihm nicht am Muth denn er tadelte gelegentlich unser öffentliches Leben und ich gerieth einmal hart mit ihm deßhalb zusammen. Einmal sagte er mir er bleibe mit ganzer Seele ein Herrmannsburger.

Als wir Sonnabends den 10ten Juni beim Kaufmann und Postmeister Louis Luck angekommen waren, fanden wir denselben willig, uns beide, den Candid. Schmidt und mich über Nacht zu behalten. Am Vormittage des Sonntage predigte ich wieder über 2 Kor. 5, 17 - 21, vollzog dann die Ordination und Einführung nach dem Formular der Missouri Agende und hielt dann heil. Abendmahl, am dem auf Ordinatus Theil nahm.

Nachmittags um 3 Uhr wurde Gemeindeversammlung gehalten, der ich auf Verlangen bei wohnte. Ich eröffnete die Gemeindeversammlung mit Gesang und Gebet u. gab ihnen wie die Gemeindeversammlung zu halten sei. Bei der Wahl des Präsidenten erklärten zwei Hauptleute, die gerade vorgeschlagen wurden, sie gehörten der Gemeinde nicht an. Ich erklärte, diese Versammlung wäre nur eine vorläufige. Darauf nahm der eine das Präsidium an und fragte um, was vorhandelt werden sollte. Auf meinen Vorschlag wurde nun die Schulsache verhandelt und die nähere Zusammenschließung der Kirchgemeinde der Zukunft überlassen. Ich schloß wieder mit Gebet und Gesang.

Das Schwierige in Blackjack Spring liegt darin, daß das Volk, dem der Pastor Schmidt dienen soll, aus Kirchenleuten und aus Freidenkern besteht. Die Freidenker können ohne die Kirchenleute nicht viel anfangen, die Kirchenleute aber allein eben so wenig. Der einzige Weg einerseits die Kirche zu bauen und anderseits die Freidenker heranzuziehen, damit sie sich ins Christenthum frei hineindenken, wird der sein daß die Kirchgemeinde für sich bestehe und die Schulgemeinde auch für sich bestehe, so daß jedem die Möglichkeit gelassen werde, seinem Herzen zu folgen. Nach dieser Richtung hin wurde ein wichtiges Wort von unserm Louis Luck ausgesprochen, dem ich in Ansehung der Umstände sofort befiel.

Darnach ist die Schule so zu halten, daß in den 4 Stunden des Vormittags die Schulfächer mit Ausschluß der Religion und in den Nachmittagsstunden von 2 Uhr an bloß Gegenstände der Religion vorgetragen werden.
