I am in receipt of your valued (letters) of the 14th and 20th of this year.

We are concerned about your stated purpose of a collection and are replying, as we recognize yours as a legitimate matter. At the present time, there is so much good that has to be done inhouse, that we did not have enough time to send you the receipt of the charged amount of $16.00 plus $4.00 in gold, for a total of $20.00 that we credited to your drawn bill of exchange.

No. 1076 - $20.00 received at 7 H. Sammer, Balzer & Tanks, N. York by Rev. H Sammer, Hastings, West Chester County, N.Y., remitted according to your instructions. Enclosed you will find a copy of our accompanying letter and the receipt of the bill of exchange.

The Harmonium will now only be able to leave Bremen in August, since, no doubt, it was too late to make the last ship in early spring.

The duty here is 30% of its value. It is not possible to receive it free of charge. But, if you register a protest about the full amount, with the definite promise of payment, and state that the instrument is only for church use and not intended for any other use, the protest will be sent to Washington, and perhaps the Treasury Department will then allow that half of the duty will be reimbursed.

Das Harmonium wird wohl erst im August von Bremen abgehen, da es dort für das letzte Schiff im jüngsten Frühjahr ohne Zweifel zu spät ankam.

Der Zoll hier ist 30% vom Werth; ganz frei ist es nicht einzuführen; wenn aber der volle Zoll unter Protest mit der ausdrücklichen Erklärung eingezahlt wird, das Instrument sei nur für kirchlichen Gebrauch + zu keinem andern Zwecke bestimmt, so wird dieser Protest nach Washington gesandt + vielleicht findet sich das Treasury-Department dann veranlaßt, die Hälfte des Zolles zu restituiren.
