Through the pressing efforts of Pastor P. Braun of Houston, TX, who had separated from the “First German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Texas” was it possible , that the president of the Missouri Synod ordered to send a candidate for the holy office of the pastor, Johann Zimmermann, to Texas, in order to give the congregation a pastor. It had been without a spiritual leader, in Spring Creek, Rose Hill, Harris County, TX.

This German congregation among other German congregations is located in the Houston Prairies 30 miles from Houston and 80 miles from Serbin. At the present this congregation consists of about 30 families. It is hoped that more will join. It owns a small wooden church and a wooden parsonage. It is a congregation, which has had 3 pastors of the Texas Synod.

As I, the undersigned, have so far been the only Missouri Synod pastor in Texas, the request for the ordination was given to me by the president’s office to ordain candidate Johann Zimmermann into the office of pastor with the assistance of P. Braun. Johann Zimmermann had arrived in Spring Creek in August of this year, his future congregation.

This ordination took place in the church at Spring Creek on the 13th Trinitatis, Sunday the 6th of September, before the gathered congregation.

It was my intent to show this congregation the type of special service I had grown fond of, which I had grown used to over the 31 years of having been a pastor. I discussed this format with P. Braun ahead of time, and he agreed to the chosen format.

The church service started at 10am. After we had sung the hymn “Herr Jesu Christi Dich zu uns wende” I intoned at the altar the “Der Herr sei mit Euch” and sang a collect with its prayer.

My organist, a farmer of Serbin, Carl Teinert, whom I had brought along, accompanied me with the melodeon organ playing it and singing the hymns. After the prayer at the altar I read the Sunday Gospel of the Good Samaritan. Then we sang the hymn “Wir Menschen sind zu dem, o Gott”, vers 1 to 5. Then the sermon started, the 10th verse of the prior hymn and a silent prayer. I preached on the Second Letter to the Corinthians, chapter 5, verse 17 to 21 and explained:
1. the Blessing of the office of pastor according to verse 17
2. the Reason for the office of pastor according to verse 18 and 19
3. the Command for the office of pastor according to verse 20 and 21

I believed to have understood correctly and stated the thought process according to Apostle Paul.

The confession and absolution, which I usually read after the sermon, I skipped, because confession and absolution had to happen after the sermon of confession. Immediately after the ordination communion would be given. After my sermon I read the general church prayer of the Missouri Synod, followed by a prayer of the same Synod for the candidate. I called out his name publicly. Then I prayed a traditional The ordination was carried through according to the formula of the Missouri Synod. After my reading of the formula P. Braun turned to the now ordained pastor and spoke the beautiful words, that God would use him for the blessing of thousands of souls.

We then sang the hymn “O Lamm Gottes unschuldig.” Then followed the confessional sermon according to Matthew, chapter 11, verse 28 to 30. This was followed by the confession and absolution. We passed out holy communion. I sang the Our Father and spoke the usual preface. I passed out the bread at the right side and P. Braun passed out the chalice from the left side. We used the traditional Lutheran distribution formula.

Pastor Zimmermann was given communion first, then the congregation, then Pastor Braun. In turn he gave communion to me. P. Braun stepped aside. I intoned the prayer of thanksgiving and sang the benediction. We then sang the hymn “Ich bleib mit Deiner Gnade” at the end of the service.

This special service took about 3 hours. The pews were crowded and the gathering very attentive.

In the afternoon at 3pm P. Braun preached on eternity according to Psalm 133. The church was once more very well attended.

It was a day the Lord had made. Let us rejoice with shouts of thanksgiving.

Durch die angelegentlichen Bemühungen des Herrn Pastors P. Braun in Houston, TX, welcher sich von der „Ersten Deutschen Evangelisch Lutherischen Synode in Texas“ getrennt hält, ist es zu stande gekommen, dass das hochwürdige Präsidium der Missouri Synode einen Kandidaten des heiligen Predigtamtes, Herrn Johann Zimmermann, nach Texas sandte, damit derselbe bei der verlassenen Gemeinde in Spring Creek, Rose Hill, Harris County, TX, als Pastor eingesetzt würde.

Diese deutsche Gemeinde befindet sich neben anderen deutschen Gemeinden in den Houston Prärien 30 Meilen von Houston und 80 Meilen von Serbin. Sie zählt jetzt etwa 30 Familien, zu denen hoffentlich noch mehrere hinzutreten werden. Sie besitzt eine kleine von Holz gebaute Kirche und ein anständiges von Holz gebautes Pfarrhaus und ist eine Gemeinde, die bereits 3 Pastoren von der Texas Synode nacheinander gehabt hat.

Da nun ich, der Unterzeichnete, bisher der einzige Pastor der Missouri Synode in Texas war, so bekam ich vom hochwertigen Präsidium dieser Synode den Auftrag, den Herrn Kandidaten, Zimmermann, der im August dieses Jahres bei seiner ihm zugewiesenen Gemeinde in Spring Creek eingetroffen ist, unter Assistenz (Hilfe) des P. Braun ihn zu weihen und in sein Amt einzuführen.

Diese Weihe und Einführung fand am 13. Trinitatis Sonntag, am 6. September, in der Kirche zu Spring Creek vor versammelter Gemeinde statt.

Mir lag daran, dieser Gemeinde die mir lieb gewordene Form dieses besonderen Gottesdienstes zu zeigen, welche ich die 31 Jahre meines Amtes gewohnt bin, womit sich mein Herr Assistent P. Braun,mit dem ich vorher darüber sprach, sich einverstand.

Der Gottesdienst begann um 10 Uhr vormittags. Nachdem das Lied “Herr Jesu Christi Dich zu uns wende” gesungen war, intonierte ich am Altar das „Der Herr sei mit Euch“ und sang eine Kollekte mit dem dazugehörigen Gebet. Mein Organist, ein Bauer aus Serbin, Carl Teinert, den ich mithatte, respondierte mit der Melodeon Orgel als Bekleidung, als er die Lieder spielte und vorsang. Nach dem Altargebet las ich das Sonntags Evangelium vom barmherzigen Samariter. Darauf folgte das Hauptlied “Wir Menschen sind zu dem, o Gott”, Vers 1 bis 5. Dann kam die Einleitung zur Predigt, derKanzelvers 10 des vorherigen Liedes und ein stilles Gebet. Ich predigte nun über den zweiten Brief an die Korinther, Kapitel 5, Vers 17 bis 21. Und erklärte
1. den Segen des Predigtamtes nach Vers 17
2. den Grund des Predigtamtes nach Vers 18 und 19, und
3. den Auftrag des Predigtamtes nach Vers 20 und 21.

So glaubte ich den Gedankengang des Apostels erfasst und dargelegt zu haben.

Die Beichte und Absolution, die ich sonst nach jeder Predigt zuerst lese, liess ich weg, weil Beichte und Absolution nach der Beichtrede vorkommen musste, denn unmittelbar nach der Weihe sollte heiliges Abendmahl gehalten werden. Ich las also nach der Predigt das allgemeine Kirchengebet der Missouri Synode, so dann ein Gebet derselben Synode für den Ordinandus (Kandidaten), den ich öffentlich nannte, und darauf ein herkömmliches Gebet für die Kommunikanten. Das gewöhnliche Schlussgebet beendete den Kanzel Gottesdienst.
Nun wurden drei Verse eines Ordinationsliedes zur Einweihung gesungen, worauf ich mit meinem Herrn Assistenten (Helfer) vor den Altar trat, der Ordinant (Kandidat)vor uns seinen Stand einnahm. Die Ordination (Amtseinführung) wurde nach dem Formular der Missouri Synode vollzogen. Nach meiner Vorlesung des Formulars richtete P. Braun sich an den Ordinierten, nun Pastor, und sprach die schönen Worte, dass Gott ihn einsetzen würde zum Segen von Tausenden.

Hierauf folgte der Gesang “O Lamm Gottes unschuldig” und die Beichtrede, die ich über Matthäus, Kapital 11, Vers 28 bis 30, hielt, woran die allgemeine Beichte und Absolution sich anschloss. Nun wurde das heilige Abendmahl ausgeteilt. Ich sang das Vater Unser und die Einsetzungsworte nach gewohnter Weise und teilte dann Brot rechts aus, während P. Braun links den Kelch gab. Wir gebrauchten beide die alt lutherische Distributions Formel. Der Herr Pastor Zimmermann empfing das Heilige Abendmahl zuerst, und ihm folgte die Gemeinde. Zuletzt gab ich das Heilige Abendmahl dem Herrn Pastor Braun, und er gab es sodann mir. Daraufhin trat der Herr Assistent ab und ich intonierte die Dank Kollekte und gab singend den Segen. Mit dem Lied „Ich bleib mit deiner Gnade“ wurde das Ganze geschlossen.

Die Feier hat ganze 3 Stunden gedauert. Die Kirche war voll und die Versammlung sehr andächtig.

Nachmittags um 3 Uhr predigte P. Braun von der Ewigkeit über Psalm 133. Die Kirche war ebenso voll als vormittags.

Das war ein Tag, den der Herr gemacht hatte. Lasst uns freuen und fröhlich drinnen sein.
