Dear Pastor,

I’ve received your letter of September 21st and it pleases me that in your congregation so many members of the Lutheran association are to be found. As God wants, this spreading of Luther’s writings is going to bring many blessings. As of today over 1,500 people shared in the Lutheran association and there is over nine hundred dollars in the Treasury. Hence, before December 31st two volumes are can be printed which each member of the association will get for his or her annual subscription, respectively fifty cents. In case it will continue perhaps four volumes will be published next year. Unfortunately only few of the four million Lutherans, who are forming, learn about the Lutheran association, because the ecclesiastical papers as I requested, not even mention the matter. The first volume is half finished, unfortunately too late, because Wiebusch, as he says, has received the new type too late. According to the contract the first volume should be sent on October 18th.

Steineck and Estel have taken the bill of exchange, because they always have statements with N.Y. and without a doubt it will be accepted there.

The exclusion of Pastor Schieferdecker, whom I have sincerely loved since his residence in Leipzig has deeply troubled me. But could it happen differently? His congregations have brought action against him that he has preached and spread Chiliasm, as his present congregational members have also told. If he had kept his individual views to himself no one could bring any action against him; alas, if you had only been in Fort Wayne and had heard as for almost five complete days all passages that speak in favor or against Chiliasm were perused with him, as he was about to realize his fallacy. In doing so everyone knew what a humble servant of our Lord Pastor Schieferdecker was. But without exception everyone was convinced that the doctrine of a coming thousand year realm is excluded by the church. I am also a Chiliast, but in an entirely different sense. In my “chronological sacra” and “the true chronology of the A.T” I have set forth with mathematical and so irrefutable reasons that from the Creation until 130 AD six millenniums had elapsed, and that from the year130 until the year 1130 AD the thousand years realm had existed, about which the Prophets and Apocalypse have divined In this time Christ had ruled and peace and joy lived in the hearts of countless millions. In contrast, how did it appear in the time of John? There suffered the poor small group of Christian people a terrible persecution. No one could expect that the church would conquer the Roman empire in which thousands and thousands had been slaughtered. The Jews had already especially diminished the true chronology, hence it has come that they until 1810, where after their chronology in the Orient the 6,000 years since the creation were passed, have waited on the beginning of the thousand year reign. This is my Chiliasm. But now when others are also convinced a millennium must come where the church is going to rule over the evil ones and perfect bliss will prevail on earth. What do they have of this idea, which however cannot be proven mathematical, or exegetical, right up to evidence. do we still need more than the doctrine that we are all poor, cursed and danged human beings, that we have been justified by grace through our beliefs? What should the poor sinner do, whose salvation has been assured, with the doctrine of the thousand year realm, or what can that be of benefit of, when someone preaches and disseminates this doctrine on the basis of his individual beliefs and at the same time places the foremost and most essential in the background. We do want, for God’s sake, to stay with this what is clear and certain.

The Concordia College counts over 80 disciples in return for which God cannot be thanked enough. The rooms are already too small again, hence sooner or later it will be necessary again to build.

I am very pleased that your congregation as well wants to build a new and larger church.

Lieber Herr Pastor!

Ihren Brief vom 21. Sept. habe ich erhalten u. freue mich, daß in Ihren Gemeinden so viele Glieder des Luthervereins sich gefunden haben. So Gott will, wird diese Verbreitung von Luthers Schriften großen Segen bringen. Bis heute sind über 1500 Personen bei dem Luthervereine betheiligt u. über $900 befinden sich in der Casse; daher vor dem 31. Dec. reichlich 2 Bände können gedruckt werden, die jedes Glied des Vereins für seinen Jahresbeitrag, resp. ¢50 erhält. Geht das so fort, so werden nächstes Jahr vielleicht 4 Bände erscheinen. Leider erfahren von den 4 Millionen Lutheranern, die sich formen, nur wenige etwas vom Luthervereine, weil die kirchlichen Blätter die Statuten nicht haben abdrucken lassen, wie ich bat, nicht einmal die Sache erwähnen. Der erste Band ist bis zur Hälfte fertig, leider zu spät, weil Wiebusch die neuen Letter,wie er sagt, zu spät erhalten hat. Dem Contracte nach soll der erste Band den 18. Oct. versendet werden.

Den Wechsel haben Steinecke u. Estel genommen, da sie stets mit N. Y. Abrechnungen haben; u. ohne Zweifel wird er daher acceptirt werden.

Die Ausschließung des Pastor Schieferdecker, den ich, seit seinem Aufenthalte in Leipzig, herzlich lieb gehabt, hat mich bis auf das Tiefste betrübt. Konnte es aber anders kommen? Seine Gemeinden hatten ihn verklagt, daß er Chiliasmus gepredigt u verbreitet [hat], wie auch seine jetzigen Gemeindeglieder lehren. Hätte er seine individuellen Ansichten für sich behalten; so konnte Niemand ihn verklagen. Ach, wären Sie nur in Fort Wayne gewesen u hätten Sie gehört, wie fast ganze 5 Tage alle Stellen, die für u. wider den Chiliasmus sprachen, mit ihm durchgegangen wurden, wie er schon im Begriffe stand, seinen Irrthum zu erkennen. Dabei wußten Alle, welch ein demüthiger Knecht unseres Herrn Past. Schieferdecker war; aber Alle ohne Ausnahme waren überzeugt, daß die Lehre von einem künftigen tausenjährigen Reiche von der Kirche aus geschlossen sey. Ich bin auch Chiliast, aber in ganz anderem Sinn. In meiner „Chronologia sacra“ u. der „Wahren Zeitrechnung des A. T.“ habe ich mit mathematischen u. daher nicht widerleglichen Gründen dargethan, daß von der Schöpfung bis 130 n. Chr. 6 Millenniums verflossen waren, daß von 130 bis 1130 n. Chr. das tausendjährige Reich bestanden [hat], wovon die Propheten u. auch die Apokalypse geweissagt [haben]. In dieser Zeit hat Christus geherrscht u. Friede u. Freude in den Herzen unzähliger Millionen gewohnt. Wie sahe es dagegen zur Zeit des Johannes aus? Da litt das arme Häuflein des Christenvolkes entsetzliche Verfolgungen, Niemand konnte erwarten, daß die Kirche das ? Römische Reich, in welchem Tausende u. Tausende geschlachtet worden waren, einnehmen würde. Die Juden hatten eigens schon die wahre Zeitrechnung verkürzt u. daher ist es gekommen, daß sie bis 1810, wo nach ihrer Zeitrechnung im Oriente die 6000 Jahre seit der Schöpfung abgelaufen [waren], auf den Anbruch des tausendjährigen Reiches gewartet haben. Dieß ist mein Chiliasmus. Wenn nun aber auch Andere überzeugt sind, es müsse ? ein Millenium kommen, wo die Kirche über die Bösen herrsche u. vollkommene Glückseligkeit auf Erden herrschen wird; was haben sie an dieser Meinung, die doch nicht mathematisch, oder exegetisch bis zur Evidenz bewiesen werden kann? Brauchen wir noch mehr, als die Lehre, daß wir Alle arme, verfluchte u. verdammte Menschen sind, daß wir aber aus Gnaden gerecht worden sind durch den Glauben? Was soll der arme Sünder, der seiner Erlösung gewiß worden ist, noch mit der Lehre vom 1000jährigen Reiche anfangen, oder was kann das frommen, wenn Jemand auf Grund seiner individuellen Ueberzeugung diese Lehre predigt u. verbreitet u. dabei das allererste u. nothwendigste in den Hintergrund stellt? Wollen wir doch um Gottes Willen dabei stehn bleiben, was klar u. gewiß ist.

Das Concordia College zählt über 80 Zöglinge, wofür Gott nicht genug gedankt werden kann. Die Räume sind schon wieder zu eng, daher über kurz oder lang wieder gebaut werden muß.

Es freut mich herzlich, daß auch Ihre Gemeinde eine neue u. größere Kirche baun will.
