[Editor's Note: Instead of appearing in person at a congregational meeting held in Serbin on the last day of Pentecost 1858, the separatists sent a letter written in Wendish. This letter, dated 25 May 1858, was copied by Pastor Kilian and the copy accompanied his letter dated, 26 May1858, to Pastor G. A. Gumlich, Weigersdorf, as Document 1 (Aktenstück 1). The German translation that follows was made by Gertrud Mahling, Bautzen, Germany.]



In the name of the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

With heartfelt sorrow we take up our pen in order to make our profession in this letter since we were quoted by the pastor in a sermon, as everyone knows, that he demanded from us one of three things:

1) that a fundamental unification must occur;

2) or that we must separate; or

3) that he must resign from his office.

But we do not want to take away anyone's office or livelihood; therefore, we want to do the second option in God's name and separate, because we can in no way accomplish a thorough agreement. Because we do not find it in the sermons that way, as the entire Holy Scripture, the old teachers, all Apostles and our Savior Himself testify, that they teach faith and life together. Like our Lord Himself says in Matthew Chapter 7, verse 20: "By their fruits ye shall know them;" also the sainted Peter says it thus in the second letter, chapter 1, verses 5-9: "And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins." Here everything must be together unconditionally, and belongs together like the head and the members and like one thing (creature) from which the fruits and deeds must come. Here the sainted Peter says openly that whoever does not have the unity of Christian faith and life does not truly know Christ, has lost the faith and walks in darkness. For this is the true faith by which the whole man in Christ lives and is renewed, that he lives and stays in Christ and he in Him. This is the doctrine we demand and this we do not find, instead, much more, that you are the spiritual enemy of the little flock, and wish that the little flock and the large crowd [the large fellowship - G. Mahling] unite, which cannot happen; moreover, the accursed error is gaining strength that grace after life does not quit, when repentance and rebirth is no longer needed, and this error our teacher advocates instead that he would try to suppress it. This is in opposition to the true Lutheran confession, so we are forced to leave the fellowship if we want to be true Lutherans. It would not help us if we also had the true foundations of the Lutheran church if they would not be converted into strength and life of our hearts.

Abide with us, Lord Jesus Christ, with Your gracious light and let us never lose it by unchristian life, but let us constantly follow You here, that we have and preserve the light of life and that we may be kept from every false doctrine, from obstinacy and blindness. Amen.

Im Namen des Vaters! des Sohnes! und des Heiligen Geistes! Amen.

Mit herzlicher Trauer greifen wir zu unserer Feder, um hier in diesem Schreiben unser Bekenntnis zu sagen, da wir vom Pastor in einer Predigt aufgeführt wurden, wie jedem bekannt ist, nämlich daß er die drei Dinge von uns verlangt

1) Daß eine grundlegende Vereinigung zu geschehen habe

2) oder wir uns trennen müssen oder

3) er sein Amt verlassen muß,

wir aber wollen niemanden um sein Amt oder Brot bringen, deshalb wollen wir das zweite Ding in Gottes Namen auf uns nehmen und uns trennen, weil wir die gründliche Einigung in keiner Weise vollziehen können, weil wir es in den Predigten nicht so finden wie uns die ganze Heilige Schrift, die alten Lehrer, alle Apostel und unser Heiland selbst bezeugen, daß sie den Glauben und das Leben zusammen lehren, wie unser Herr selbst sagt in Matthäus Kapitel 7, Vers 20, an ihren Früchten werdet ihr sie erkennen, auch der heilige Petrus sagt es so im 2. Brief, Kapitel 1, Vers 5-9, So wendet alle Mühe daran und erweist in eurem Glauben Tugend und in der Tugend Erkenntnis und in der Erkenntnis Mäßigkeit und in der Mäßigkeit Geduld und in der Geduld Frömmigkeit und in der Frömmigkeit brüderliche Liebe und in der brüderlichen Liebe die Liebe zu allen Menschen, denn wenn dies alles reichlich bei euch ist, wird's euch nicht faul und unfruchtbar sein lassen in der Erkenntnis unseres Herrn Jesus Christus, wer dies aber nicht hat, der ist blind und tappt im Dunkeln und hat vergessen, daß er rein geworden ist von seinen früheren Sünden. Hier muß unbedingt alles zusammen sein und gehört zusammen wie der Kopf und die Glieder und wie ein Ding, aus dem die Früchte und Taten kommen müssen. Hier sagt der heilige Petrus öffentlich, bei wem diese Einheit des christlichen Glaubens und des Lebens nicht ist, der kennt Christus nicht richtig, der hat den Glauben verloren und geht im Dunkeln. Denn das ist der rechte Glaube, durch den der ganze Mensch in Christus lebt und erneuert wird, daß er in Christus lebt und bleibt und Christus in ihm. So fordern wir die Lehre und so finden wir sie nicht, sondern vielmehr dies, daß Ihr der geistliche Feind der kleinen Herde seid und wollt, daß die kleine Herde und der große Haufen (große Gemeinschaft, G. Mahling) sich vereinigen, was nie geschehen kann, überdies noch gewinnt der verfluchte Irrtum an Kraft, daß mit dem Leben die Gnade nicht aufhöre, wo Buße und Wiedergeburt nicht nötig sein sollen, und diesen Irrtum vertritt unser Lehrer anstatt daß er versuchen würde ihn zu unterdrücken. Dies ist entgegengesetzt dem rechten lutherischen Bekenntnis, hier sind wir gezwungen, die Gemeinschaft zu verlassen wenn wir rechte Lutheraner sein wollen, es würde uns deshalb nicht helfen wenn wir auch die richtigen Fundamente der Lutherischen Kirche hätten, wenn sie nicht in Kraft und Leben unserer Herzen umgewandelt würden.

Ach bleib bei uns Herr Jesus Christus mit deinem gnädigen Licht und laß uns dasselbe niemals durch unchristliches Leben verlieren, sondern laß uns hier ständig dir nachfolgen, daß wir das Licht des Leben haben und bewahren und daß wir vor jeglicher falschen Lehre, vor Starrsinn und Blindheit bewahrt bleiben mögen. Amen.
