B. 013. The Parting

(From Jessen , Burg and Anton)
Translated by Joel R. Meador

There stands a beautiful red and white rose,
Blooming in a green place in the forest.

That is really not a lovely rose,
It is really a beautiful girl.

She spoke to the boy, ‘I’m telling you,
I’m coming to visit today, to visit me.’

‘I’m coming to visit today, coming to visit you,
While all the other are going to rest..

That’s the way it was in the evening twilight,
The lover came quickly without hesitation.

“Where are you sleeping, where do you lie, my love,
Stand up, just stand up and recognize me.”

‘If it is at night time,
Do not allow anyone else in.’

“And if you do not recognize me in the dark,
You know me well enough to recognize my voice.”

“So you will know me when I walk so quietly,
And how softly will I knock.”

“So strike up a light,
And you will see me and not mistake me for someone else.”

‘The light is always burning for me,
As I stand there speaking with others.’

“Now good night, good night, oh love of mine,
Good night our love so true and pure.”

“She slips by so softly in this world
Like a feather that falls upon the water.”

“The feather floats quickly by on the water,
It blows every which way in the wind.”

“It is also exactly the same with love,
Softly it goes together and finds itself.”

“Softly it goes together and finds itself,
With difficulty they part and separate from each other.”
