A. 299. The Lie

(from Langenfoerstchen)
Translated by H. Melvin Symmank

‘In my Father's garden stands,
There stands a green tree,
On this tree there are little apples
Beautiful white-red to look at.’

'Pick for me, O maid, a little apple
An apple beautiful white-red'
"Why should I then pick one for you
As I have no time?"

'You consider(it) such a difficult (task) to fall on you
To pluck a little apple?
I consider it not difficult to fall on me
Because I love you.'

"Also to me it is completely not difficult
If one I loved
I no more look on you alone
I have one other long ago."

The little apples are like the people
Different in the world.
On one side they are red
And on the other (side) green.
