A. 285. St George I

(From Driewiz)
Translated by Ed Bernthal

On the other side of the city
There was a pool.
In this large pool
Sat a huge dragon.

Thirteen men he had
At one time for his breakfast.
But he never
Had enough for breakfast.

He kept going around
Stopping by the Kaiser,
Stopping by the Kaiser,
And by his youngest daughter.

The Kaiser looked around:
Is there nowhere anyone,
Is there nowhere anyone,
That would go there to save her?

The Kaiser went home:
‘Daughter, dear daughter
No one is to be found
That will go there to save you.’

‘Take off, take off,
Your golden corset.
Put on, put on,
Your linen corset.’

‘Take off now, take off,
Your silken robe.
Put on now, put on now,
Your woolen robe.’

‘So that you can go there
To the evil dragon,
To the evil dragon,
To a sad death.’

And the daughter took off
The golden corset,
She put on
the linen corset.

She took off, took off
Her silken robe,
She put on, put on
Her woolen robe.

So she could go to there
To the evil dragon,
To the evil dragon,
To a sad death.

The daughter goes to the pool.
The dragon swims to the shore,
The dragon swims to the shore,
Sprays fire in his rage.

And the daughter cries out:
‘Dear God in heaven
Dear Saint George
Kill this dragon!’

‘I will gladly give you half
Of my money
And half of the city
And half from the castle.’

“I will not have half
of your money,
half of your city
and half of your castle.”

And he stabbed the dragon,
And the dragon bellowed,
And the dragon bellowed
Sprayed fire in his rage.

And Saint George
Grabbed the dragon by the throat,
And kept pulling him further
Out of the great pool.

All the little children
Stared out of the windows.
All the old people
Ran to help him.

“Go dig a hole
Thirty feet wise,
And forty feet deep,
So we can bury him.”

‘Dear Saint George!
What can we give you,
What can we give you,
For killing him?’

“What can you give me?
You have to give me nothing.
Just honor my name
Until Judgment Day.”

There they dug the hole
Also built a small church,
Such a small church,
In the middle of the city.

And in this church,
There is a small altar,
And on the alter
Is the dear Saint Georg.
