A. 172. The Young Girl's Choice

(from Ratzen)
Translated by H. Melvin Symmank

Over there stands our thrashing floor
The Orphans all so nice.
Who goes and cuts away for him?
The beautiful young girl.

Who calls the young girl home?
Her old dear mother:
'Come home, come home, my little girl,
My dear daughter.'

'A horseman came riding to us
On a white steed.
He wants to speak with you himself,
If you desire to take him.'

"No, such a one I do not want,
Who writes with the pen,
I rather desire such a man
Who ploughs with a plough."
