A. 129. The Deceitful

(From Baruth)
Translated by H. Melvin Symmank

All beautiful girls
go for a beer,
and with them Hannchen,
Haenschen also goes.

Haenschen speaks, "To where
are you bringing me;
That you turn your step away
from the pathway?"

"Wait yet, Hannchen,
only a little while,
Wait yet, we soon
come into the village."

"Turn yourself, my Haenschen,
now away from me,
Tighter my apron
I will tie on me."

And away from Hannchen,
Haenschen turned himself,
Sown into the quarry
Hannchen thrusted the fellow.

"You, hand my pipe,
Hannchen, over to me,
That I once again
can play for me."

"No, I will never
hand you the pipe,
Because you could pipe
robbers here."

"I have already long
known you, my Hannchen,
But I still have not
yet recognized you."

"I always have known you well
by your beauty,
But I never have recognized you
by the deceit."
