(From: Mr. M. Domaschka in Kumerau)
Translated by Ed Bernthal
Terrible cold befell us
Turkish hordes were storming in.
Where is undaunted young man
That can stand up against the Turks?
The young man armed himself for war.
Said the young maiden,
‘May God bless you, young man,
Till you come back from the war.’
When they had ridden half way,
The young man became thirsty.
The Turks got an old woman
To poison the young man.
‘ To show care for me, let me
Drink your water, old woman.’
Hardly had he drunk the water
When the young man became very sick.
‘It was not for care of me, not for care of me
That you gave me the poison.’
‘Since my God loves me dearly
Let my young maiden know about this.’
Then as Sunday evening came,
The young maiden read in a book.
The young maiden read in a book
Kindly taught the little children.
“Listen now, only see dear children
How beautiful it is in Paradise.”
“How beautiful it is in Paradise,
For your father to go to mass.”
“Let’s go down to the garden,
Let’s sing and pray there together.”
“Let’s sing and pray there together,
So that we never forget our God.”
The well overflows with blood.
The evergreen tree is bowed deeply to the earth.
