A. 027. A Futile Argument

(From Hoefchen)
Translated by Ed Bernthal

It was eleven o’clock when he went to see his girl,
It was twelve o’clock when he went back home.

‘My love, why are you in such a hurry to go home?
You came at night, at night you want to go back’.

“Don’t you know, my dear that it is a long way,
And that I was afraid on this lonely way?”

‘I will go a short way with you, it won’t be long,
Then you will have to go the rest of the way alone’

The girls accompanied her beloved,
On the way so straight and broad.

‘I will turn around now and sneak back,
Now, my loved one, you must go alone’.

“Where have you been my daughter?
Who woke you up by starlight?”

‘I was in the grass, there in the grove,
Something frightened me! Oh, what I saw there!”

“Where is the sickle, where do you have the grass,
The apron, the whetstone? Oh, what is this?”

‘I left all of that in the grove,
Ran out of it bare and alone’.

“You accompanied your loved one home.
Do you want to lie to your mother about this?”
