Cholera Epidemic

In case it has not been brought up yet, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has excellent information on Cholera: https://www.cdc.gov/cholera/index.html

Also, as sad as it is a coincidence, 1854 saw not only the emigration of Wends to Texas but also the first time the dreaded cholera was accurately located through a contaminated water source in the Broad Street public water pump thanks to the efforts of Dr. John Snow.
