Word for Word Copy of the Agreement by both Church Councils of the St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Congregations in Serbin

Serbin, Bastrop County, Texas January 15, 1874

We, both of the undersigned Church Councils of the Evangelical Lutheran Churches and A.C. have today, January 15, 1874, under the Honorable Visitor of the Missouri Synod and in the presence of Pastor Tirmenstein passed the following resolutions:

1.) Resolved, that each Church Council of its congregation, regarding such marriages where the one person belongs to one, and the other person belongs to the other involved congregation, to give the Pastor the authority to release the groom or the bride, so that both can belong to the one and same congregation.

2.) Resolved, that the Church Councils of both congregations approve and consider it beneficial that the St. Paul’s Congregation be pure Wendish and that the St. Peter’s Congregation be pure German, namely, that in the first one the Means of Grace, the Word and the Sacraments, be used only in Wendish, and that the other one use only German, so that thereby future controversies might be avoided, and that Christian unity and peace may be furthered, so that from this both congregations in Serbin can now promote the Kingdom of God according to their strength, and establish such a wall of partition whereby nothing unchristian can intrude into the congregations or take control.

3.) Resolved, that for this purpose it is advisable, that the Germans in the St. Paul’s Congregation and the Wends in the St. Peter’s Congregation be given till June 24 to declare themselves whether they want to belong to the German or the Wendish Congregation, but that already from the Sunday after Easter, in the Wendish Congregation, only Wendish worship services be held, and that in the St. Peter’s Congregation only German worship services be held.

Wörtliche Abschrift des agreement der beiden Kirchenräthe der St. Petri’s und St. Paul’s Gemeinden zu Serbin!

Serbin, Bastrop Co, Texas, am 15 Jan 1874.

Wir, die beiden unterzeichneten Kirchenräthe der beiden ev. Luth. Gemeinden u. A. C. haben heute, am 15 Jan. 1874 unter Präsidium des Hocher. Visitor der Missourisynode in dem _____, Herrn Pastor Tirmenstein folgende Beschüsse gefast:

1.) Beschlossen das jeder Kirchenräthe, in Betreff solcher Ehen, da der eine Theil zu der einen, u. der andern Theil zu der andern der beiden betreffenden Gemeinde gehört, den Pastor die Vollmacht zu geben, den Brautigam oder die Braut zu entlassen, damit beide Eheleute zu eine und derselbe Gemeinde gehören könne.

2.) Beschlossen das die beiden Kirchenräthe der beiden Gemeinden es für gut und heilsam erkönnen, das die St.Paulusgemeinde ein rein wendischer und die St. Petrigemeinde eine rein deutsche Gemeinde werde, nämlich, das in ersteren die Gnadenmittel Wort Gottes und Sacraments, nur wendisch, und in letzteren nur deutsch gehandelt werden, das durch kommenden Stürmen vorgebeugt u. die Christliche Eintracht u. Friede gefördert werden kann, das nun auch ihre Christlichepflicht den Wohl des Reiches Gottes nach ihren Kräften zu fördern, eine solche Christliche Scheidenwand aufrichten wozu, damit nichts Unchristliche in die Gemeinden eindringen u. zu macht gelangen werden können.

3.) Beschlossen, das zu diesem Zweck es rathsam ist, das die deutschen in der St.Paulusgemeinde und die Wenden in der St.Petrigemeinde bis zum 24 Juni sich erklären sollen, ob sie zu der deutschen oder zu der wendischen Gemeinde gehören wollen, das aber schon vom Sonntag nach Ostern an in der St.Paulusgemeinde nur wendischen u. in der St.Petrigemeinde nur deurschen Gottesdienste gehalten wörde.
