Attention Rev. Proft and Palmer

Dear Honorable Sirs!

Your cordial and well meaning letter of March 4th of this year was discussed in great detail last Sunday afternoon not only by the empowered alone, but also several members were invited and their advice requested.

We are glad to hear that you desire to continue to have an exchange of thoughts and opinions despite the fact, that your view might not agree with ours.

On November 12, 1871, we stated in your congregational meeting that we choose to call just one school teacher. But our decision was very much rejected.

In the congregational meeting of Easter 1872, the congregation divided into two school congregations with the condition, that each of the school communities would have to choose its own way and be fully responsible. On the second day of Easter this year (1873), the protocol was read, but it was not signed due to negligence. Earlier you read in the protocol that now each of the school communities will choose its own way.

Because nobody told us anything, and today this was said and tomorrow something else, until the whole matter became so confusing, we decided then to have our own church and school. We are stronger with both than with one of the two. We stand by this decision, never minding what will be. We regret, if we cannot have a Wendish pastor and teacher in one person, as they are available. We know from a reliable source, that Pastor Proft’s congregation will divide between today and the next three months. If he does not leave that church within three months, 10 families will leave it. We received this information from a dependable source, who is against Pastor Proft. But we are on his side.

It is true that people have to travel 30 to 60 miles to church, not only here in America, but also the Lutherans in Prussia had to walk that far or further. We are witnesses to that. But we also ask the question, what has become of many of those on this side and the other side of the ocean? Many whom we know personally here and there, do not even belong to a sect these days, much less to a Lutheran church.

It is true that within a radius of 15 miles we can find two Lutheran churches. They are almost too close to one another. It is not our fault that they are situated so close to one another. Fayette County and Pastor Kilian intended to leave the church at time of separation of those who intended to leave this church. But some neighbors of ours prevented it from happening. The separation would have made sense and met a need. We do not doubt, that our separation is a way to unite the two congregations in Serbin, Bastrop County. But to wait for the two congregations to unite we do not demand, but also expect no support from the mother church. We leave behind our church materials as they stand today.

We admit that it is not easy for a pastor to leave a congregation and go to another; but under certain circumstances it is the right thing to do and cannot be prohibited. Pastor Palmer was with one congregation and was able to leave it, in order to come here. Pastor Palmer recognizes today that this step was needed. Often you hear and read about pastors ……..

An die Herren Pastoren Proft und Palmer

Hochgeehrteste Herren!

Euer herzliches und wohlmeinendes Schreiben vom 4. März des Jahres haben wir am letzten Sonntag Nachmittag, nicht nur die Bevollmächtigten allein, sondern auch mehrere der beteiligten Mitglieder zu Rate gezogen und reiflich besprochen.

Es freut uns, dass Sie auch dann, wenn wir auch Eure Ansicht nicht zu der unserigen machen können, einen weiteren Gedanken und Meinungsaustausch nicht abschneiden wollen.

Unsere erste Meinung war schon am 12. November 1871, in der damaligen Gemeinde Versammlung, die ihrige, dass wir nämlich nur einen Schullehrer berufen wollten. Wir wurden aber damals ziemlich grob abgewiesen.

In der Gemeinde Versammlung von Ostern 1872, teilte sich die Gemeinde in zwei Schulgemeinden mit der Bedingung, dass jede der Schulgemeinden ihren eigenen Weg zu gehen hat und für sich zu sorgen hat. Am zweiten Ostertag dieses Jahres wurde das Protokoll vorgelesen, aber durch Vernachläßigung nicht unterschrieben; früher stand in dem Protokoll nur “so dass nun jede der Schulgemeinden ihren eigenen Weg geht”.

Wir sind erst später darauf gekommen, weil uns niergends ein Wort gehalten wurde und heute so und morgen anderes gesagt wurde, bis endlich die ganze Sache in so eine Verwirrung kam, dass wir einen Beschluss fasten, eine eigene Kirchen und Schulgemeinde einzurichten, weil wir auch zu beiden stärker sind als wir zu einer; und dieser Beschluss bleibt auch fest stehen, es mag kommen zu was es wolle. Es tut uns freilich leid, wenn wir nicht einen wendischen Pastor und Lehrer besser in einer Person kriegen könnten, da doch welche dasind. Wir wissen aus guter Quelle, daß auch Herr Pastor Profts Gemeinde binnen heute und drei Monaten auseinandergeht. Wenn er auch dort bleibt, 10 Familien trennen sich, wenn er binnen drei Monaten nicht weggeht. Wir haben solches von einem zuverläßigen Mann, der freilich auch gegen ihn ist, gehört. Nun, wir sind aber für ihn.

Wahr ist es, dass Leute 30 bis 60 Meilen weit nach der Kirche haben, nicht nur hier in Amerika, sondern auch die Lutheraner in Preußen hatten sicher auch zum Teil viel weiter, wessen wir Zeugen sind. Aber wir fragen, was ist auch aus vielen in diesem und jenem Teil der Welt geworden? Viele, die wir hier und dort persönlich kennen, halten sich heute nicht einmal zu einer Sekte, viel weniger zur Lutherischen Kirche.

Wahr ist es, dass innerhalb eines Kreises von 15 Meilen Durchmesser sogar zwei Lutherische Kirchen stehen,
aber leider beinah zu nahe bei einanderen stehen. Wir sind daran nicht Schuld, dass sie so nahe zusammen stehen. Die Fayette County nebst dem Herrn Pastor Kilian wollten damals bei der Trennung von den Ausscheidenden unserer Kirche abtreten, aber einige Nachbarn von unserer Seite haben es verhindert, sonst haette die Trennung wenigstens doch einen Sinn und Nutzen gehabt. Wir zweifeln aber nicht daran, dass unsere Trennung ein Weg zur Vereinigung der beiden Gemeinden in Serbin, Bastrop County, ist. Aber darauf warten, bis sich die beiden Gemeinden vereinigen werden verlangen wir nicht, aber auch keine Unterstützung von der Mutter Gemeinde, sondern überlassen derselben unsere Kirchengüter, wie sie stehen.

Wir geben das zu, daß das für einen Pastor nicht so leicht ist, aus einer Gemeinde zu der anderen zu gehen, aber unter gewißen Umständen ist es und kann nicht verboten sein, denn auch Pastor Palmer war bei einer Gemeinde und konntesie verlaßen und hierher kommen, was er heute selber einsieht, das es notwendig war.
