B. 042. Inexhaustible Love

(From Burk and other places)

Translated by Ed Bernthal

1. My loved one built a small boat,
Built it out of maple wood,
When he finished building it
He put it into the water.

2. Swim, swim, dear little boat,
Always closer to the castle.
It arrived at the castle,
And it stayed by the castle.

3. All the people there were sleeping,
Except a lovely maiden.
This one sat, this one sat
At the bright little window.

4. Now as the maiden noticed him,
In the white castle, the high one
She was spinning red yarn,
And she threaded green yarn.

5. She made it into a rope
For her most beloved one:
‘Pull yourself up, most beloved one,
Up on the silken rope.’

6. And the lover pulled himself
Up on the silken rope,
Up on the silken rope
Over the mighty deep water.

7. Where the lovely maiden lived,
Where his most beloved one waited.
“Be my loved one as long,
As there is deep water.”

8. ‘Now when the water runs out
So our love will be gone.’
“But like water that never runs out
So our love will never be gone.”
