A. 284. The Betrayal by the Jews

Translated by Ed Bernthal

God, the Highest traveled
Through the world throughout,
Through the world throughout,
Through the large land.

There he came upon
A very small house.
In the very small house
Was a widow.

‘Lodge, lodge
Us, you poor widow’
“I will gladly lodge you
But I have no bread.”

‘I am not concerned about the bread
That I will pay for,
That I will pay for,
With thirty pieces of silver.’

“Thirty pieces of silver
Is not too much,
Is not too much,
But is also not too little.”

‘Who among you
Will get bread for us,
Will get bread for us,
For thirty pieces of silver?’

Judas was quick to say,
“Master, I will go”
Judas went for bread
On the Jewish street.

The Jews there were playing
Under a bottig.
Offered to Judas
‘Come and bet.’

“If I bet, or if I don’t bet
I would lose it all.”
Judas bet the first time
And right away won it all.

Judas bet the second time
And right away won it all.
Judas bet the third time
And right away lost it all.

‘But why are you,
Judas, now so sad?
Go and sell your master
For thirty pieces of silver.’

‘Who among you all is it
Who has sold me!
You have sold me
And did not regard me highly.’

Saint John said:
“Lord, O Master, is it I?”
‘No, Saint John
No, you will never be it.’

Saint Peter also said:
“Lord, O Master, is it I?”
‘Peter, my Saint Peter
No, you will never be it.’

Said the false Judas”
“Lord, O Master, is it I?”
‘Judas, false Judas,
You know that the best.’

Judas, quickly
Ran to hang himself
It regretted him very much
It hurt him very much.

God called after him:
‘Turn around, O Judas
Your sin is forgiven
Your punishment has been canceled.”

Judas kept on running
And came upon a pine tree
“Weak branches, O pine tree
You will not be able to carry me.”

Hung himself, the false Judas
On the branches of an aspen tree
The aspen quakes and trembles
Thinking about Judgment Day.
