A. 258. When the Wedding Guests Arrive with the Bridegroom

Translated by Ed Bernthal

The youths came riding and chasing
Stopped there on the green hill
Stopped there on the green hill.

And then they asked right away
‘Where is N. Niches new farm
Where is N. Niches new farm?’

“It is easy to recognize N. Niches new farm
In front of it stands a green lime tree
In front of it stands a green lime tree.”

Under the lime tree sat the girl
Beautiful girl, white and red to behold
Beautiful girl, white and red to behold.

There she was combing her hair
Combed her hair and plaited it there
Combed her hair and plaited it there.

As she noticed the steps of the horses
She said right away she recognized her loved one
And ran in to her mother.

She asked her mother for the first time
‘Mother, my dear old mother, you
Mother, my dear old mother, you

‘Don’t let the youths come into the yard
Till I put on my stockings and shoes
Till I put on my stockings and shoes.’

“How can I keep them from coming into the yard
Since your loved one himself is with them
Since your loved one himself is with them?”

She asked her mother for the second time
‘Mother, my dear old mother, you
Mother, my dear old mother, you.’

‘Don’t let the youths come into the house
Till I put on my fur and my coat
Till I put on my fur and my coat.’

“How can I keep from letting them come into the house
Since your loved one himself is with them
Since your loved one himself is with them?”

She asked her mother for the third time
‘Mother, my dear old mother, you
Mother, my dear old mother, you.’

‘Don’t let the youths come into the living room
Till I have put on the braid trimming and the wreath
Till I have put on the braid trimming and the wreath.’

“How can I keep them from coming into the living room
Since your loved one himself is with them
Since your loved one himself is with them?”

The youths stepped into the living room
But the girl cried very much
And wrung her white hands.

‘Be still, don’t cry, girl
Now everything, yes everything is in vain
Now everything, yes everything is in vain.’

‘That you plaited your hair
That you put on your stockings and shoes
That you put on your stockings and shoes,’

‘That you put on the braid trimmings and wreath
That you put on the fur and the coat
That you put on the fur and the coat.’
