A. 186. Awkward Coat

Translated by H. Melvin Symmank

'Oh, but what is that for a tailor
That has sewn such a coat?
The front is much too short,
The back is much too long.'

"That is not the fault of the tailor,
That is the boy's fault."
'Only send it to a doctor,
But he will not help you.'

'To you the doctor will only say:
Kid, it is not right with you!
You go with deceit with the boys,
Now do not deceive yourself.'

The girl cries miserably,
Holding the little son in her apron.
"'Do not cry my child, and be silent,
You only make yourself sorrowful."'

'Cry on, my girl, cry,
You cry yet some more
Wipe your eyes with stones,
Cry yet much more.'

"Oh, there I was yet quite foolish,
When I cried all the time,
And I was yet much more foolish,
I wipe from me the tears."
