A. 150. Riddle

(from Merzdorf)
Translated by H. Melvin Symmank

'Now tell me my young girl
What may be green in winter
So beautiful, so fresh, so green?'

"The fir on the little hill there
That is continually green in winter
That is so fresh, so green."

'Now tell me, my young girl
What may be without a flower in summer
Truly blank without flowers?'

"On the little hill there stands the fern
On which appears no flower thereon
Truly blank without flower."

'Now tell me, my young girl
What is more precious than silver
As silver pure and clear?'

“My diamond crown, the honor yours,
Must truly be more precious than silver
Than silver pure and clear."

'Now tell me, my young girl
What may be lighter than a feather
A feather from the goose?'

"When we come together here
Yes, that is lighter to you and to me
As a feather from the goose."

'Now tell me, my young girl
What is truly heavier than a stone
Truly as a large millstone?'

"When we are parted from each other
Yes that is heavier for you and me
As if a large millstone."
