Translated by Ed Bernthal
There in Gross-Haehnchen, in the middle of the town,
Were two groups of youth together.
With them there sat a young girl,
A young girl, so beautiful, so white and red.
The young girl combed her hair,
Wound it up in bright silk.
‘Give the young girl the seat of honor.
Spread silk in her path!’
“Don’t give me the seat of honor.
Don’t spread silk in my path.”
“I am not a kings or a nobleman’s daughter.
I am only a poor orphan child.”
Four musicians played for her.
The youth raised their beer mugs high.
“You musicians, don’t play for me.
Youths don’t raise your beer mugs high.”
“Nothing gives me joy and happiness anymore.
Everything is only sadness and sorrow.”
