A. 274. The Marital Estate

Translated by Ed Bernthal

Christian, you have known
Where the marital estate came from
Now, to be sure, I say it again
That man did not establish it
God himself established it
In Paradise.

When Adam was created
He was put to sleep
So that he could see nothing
God opened him his right side
And created a wife for him that made him happy
About his married wife.

Securely established is the bond
Through the mouth of the holy priest
And his is the prayer
That no one should ever dare
To break this bond
Until in death.

It is heavy for the Christian to carry
When the marriage has been ill advised
He has only cross and sorrow
But be patient! It will have to bring
What has been determined, what has to happen
Contentment!

Paul says: A sacrament
Which gives great benefits
Is the marital estate
Praise God, love your wives
Then you will see the crown
In heaven.

Wedding guests, I still ask you
To remember the wedding
Pray for their marriage
That for the groom in this life
As well as for the young bride
It will always go well with them.

Worthy guests, I will go now
But I still want to make a wish
Good fortune and peacefulness
May be yours day and night
In Him who has all things in his hands
At all times.

Musicians, play well
Loved ones, join in happy songs
Rejoice in a happy mood
Thereby we praise the name
Of God and happily say Amen
So it is good.
