(From Ssymank in Ratsin)
Translated by Ed Bernthal

As I was going home
Through a green grove
A young maiden met me
Who once was my own.

The maiden said to me
“Where have you been, my sweetheart?
Where have you been, my dear sweetheart
That you have not come to me?”

Till today, I have been elsewhere
With my friends.
Next Sunday I will come again
For sure to you.

If not next Sunday
Still on the second one
And if not on the second one
Still at the small fair.

If not at the small fair
Then at the large one
And if not at the large one
Then still the next year.

“Yes, if you would like it earlier
So stay where you are
Where you carried your ginger
Also carry your pepper”.
