B. 075. But He Came Again

Translated by Ed Bernthal

‘Swim, swim, little leaves,
To my loved ones bedroom!’
After swimming to the bedroom
They could not get in.

The door is very well
Locked up tightly,
Closed with a stack of hay,
Shut up with pea corn.

Three similar pretty girls
Stayed in the bedroom,
But the youngest, a lively child,
Won the prize for being the prettiest.

Take your loved one, lead him
By the hand to the room:
“Now my loved one tell me,
Whether you really love me?”

‘Yes, I love you very much,
But I will never marry you,
But I will never marry you,
Still I love you very much.”

She tied him up, hand and foot,
And threw him down on the floor,
Also broke him his rib,
That went to his head.

‘Thank you, my loved one,
That you did this to me,
I will now also go away from you,
And never see you again.’

“Oh, my sweetheart, don’t say that,
Surely you will come again.”
Not even a quarter year passed,
Before the sweetheart was regularly with her.
