(From Naundorf)
Translated by H. Melvin Symmank

Evenings, the evenings are very great darkness,
The footpath and way are no longer seen,
Also the nightingale is no longer heard.

Yet the beautiful girl
Was asked by the lad, who liked her,
'Would you like to be escorted home.’

"Truly I will consent for you to escort me home
But I will not go further,
I will not go further with you.”

"Our people get up early,
Call me, call me, when it is time.
Call me, call me, when it is time.”

'Get up, my teamster you,
The husbandman already goes out to plough,
Only you, my dearest , yet lies and sleeps.’

"Do not call, do not scold, my dear mother,
I had so little sleep in the night,
I have escorted my love home.”

"I have gone far and wide with her,
I have yet no little word spoken with her.
I have yet no little word spoken with her.”
