(From Wittichenau)
Translated by H. Melvin Symmank

The farm girl went out early
Out into the green grass,
There on the piece of reservation,
Well on the green meadow.

There the grass stood so high, so fresh,
There the yellow clover bloomed;
The young girls goes out barefoot,
The dew is cold, Woo-ee!

Say, young girl, there the dew so cold,
'Why do you go barefoot?
Have you a love with great good,
Who might buy shoes for you'

'Might he truly buy shoes for you,
Truly beautiful leather shoes,
Might he also buy socks for you,
Beautiful colored flowers in addition.

"What help is it for me, that I have no love,
When he is at war,
Yes, when my love is at war,
In a war at all so distant."

The love was not at all that distant,
He certainly heard it all.
"' What do you desire, that I, your love,
should buy from the fair?"'

"Buy for me, my dear, whatever you desire,
Only do not buy the trimmings
That I have enough from my mother,
I truly do not need that."

The love purchased a little cradle,
A colorful little cradle,
In addition a red ribbon
In which was plaited with green.
