(From Merzdorf on the Spree)
Translated by H. Melvin Symmank

In my father's yard
There stands a trooper's tableau.
'Oh my dear trooper,
I pour out to you my need.'

'I have lost my love,
Have you not seen him?'
"In the grove, in forest, in the green forest,
He lies there and sleeps."

'What grows on his grave?'
"A green rosemary."
'What stands written on it?'
"You should forget him."

'How would I be able to forget him,
When I always see him?'
'I do not see him during the day,
But I dream of him at nights.'
