A. 008. The Struggle for Love

Translated by Joel Meador

There above Uhyst on the Taucher,
There stands a green linden tree,
And under the tree a young girl is sitting,
So lovely in red and white.

There came horsemen riding up to her,
A horseman and a noble man,
They both came riding up to her,
They had set aside their differences.

But then they fell into a severe quarrel
The two young chieftains,
At a clearing in the woods they began to pick at each other,
The two young chieftains.

Then one of them cut the other over the cheek,
Indeed brought blood to his cheek,
Then the wounded one struck the other one over the head,
Indeed over his curly hair.

“And all of that happened around you,
You loveliest of young ladies.”
“How could all that happen around me,”
I was not really even near them.”

“And were you or were you not by them,
The advise you gave nevertheless,
Sitting there on the table in the tavern
At the bright little window.”

The girl had two aprons
Of heavy cloth, both of them were white,
She shredded one into patches there,
And the other she tore into long strips.

The loveliest piece she wanted to smooth over,
The most beautiful of treasures.
“My little girl, smooth it over or not,
We ourselves are not going.”

“Remember, you are going to think of me.
If they are soon going to adorn me,
Yes, adorn me, yes, dress me in white robes,
And adorn me with a diamond wreath.”
